The rules

No licence
Up to 40.8 hp (30 kW) engine power, within 6 nautical miles of the shore. Bigger engines need a boating licence. Source
Near the shore
In the first 50 m from the shore, 5 knots at most and only straight in or out, at right angles to the shore. From 50 to 150 m you may run along the shore at up to 10 knots. Source
Open water
Beyond 150 m from the shore: 27 knots by day and 10 knots at night. Source
Monte Isola
Around Monte Isola and in the channel between the island and the Sulzano–Sale Marasino shore, 10 knots at most. Source
No-go areas
No boats in bathing areas, in the reed beds or in other marked zones. In some marked zones you may only go at idle speed. Source
Jet skis
Jet skis are banned on the whole lake, by ordinance of the lakeside towns. Source
Water-skiing
Only from 8 am to 8 pm, at least 300 m from the shore, and the driver needs a boating licence. Some stretches are closed to it altogether. Source

A summary, not legal advice. The lake is regulated by the Autorità di Bacino Lacuale dei laghi d’Iseo, Endine e Moro and the lakeside towns. The rental company briefs you before you leave, and its rules and the local ordinances apply.

Which boat?

Licence-free motorboat

Usually 40 hp, for a family or a small group. Enough to go round Monte Isola and reach the small islands of Loreto and San Paolo. The usual choice for a first time.

Wooden boat

On Monte Isola a boatyard rents the wooden gozzi it builds itself, without a licence and by the hour.

With a licence

More powerful boats for longer days on the lake. You show your licence when you pick it up.

With a skipper

Someone else drives: in a vintage Riva, a traditional naèt fishing boat or a water taxi. No licence and no rules to learn.

Good to know

  • Bring an ID. Most companies take a deposit, and some ask for a card.
  • Ask whether fuel is included: some prices include it, others charge for what you use.
  • The Vèt blows down the lake from the north until about 10 in the morning; from about 11 the Òra comes up from the south until sunset.
  • Keep clear of the ferries and their piers, especially on the busy crossings between Sulzano, Sale Marasino and Monte Isola, and of swimmers.
